Grief and Loss Counseling
There are different types of loss that can be associated with strong feelings of grief, such as the loss of a loved one or close friend, death of a partner, colleague, classmate, serious illness of a loved one, a relationship breakup, or death of a family member. There are also subtle losses that can also cause strong feelings of grief whereby people that are close to you may not know the extent of how it is impacting you. These can include leaving home, illness or loss of health, a change of job, death of a pet, graduation from school, a move to a new home, loss of financial security, or the loss of a physical ability.
When experiencing grief, it is common to experience sleep disturbance, nightmares, distressing thoughts, depressed mood, social isolation, or anxiety or fearfulness, to Feel like you are "going crazy," to feel sad or depressed, have difficulty concentrating, to feel frustrated or misunderstood, and be irritable or angry (at oneself, the deceased, others, or God). It is also common tofeel ambivalent, to feel like you want to "escape," to experience guilt or remorse,or to experience a lack of energy, motivation, or to feel numb.
The grief process is experienced in cycles. Giving yourself permission to experience whatever feeling you need to experience and having patience is key with the grief process.
