Child and Adolescent Therapy
It’s time to seek professional help when your child or teen is experiencing emotional or behavioral problems. The earlier they get treatment, the easier it is to help them. If there is a history of mental illness in your family, then be aware of the increased possibility that your child will begin to develop a disorder. If this is the case, then it’s important to take prompt action. If you discover your child or teen has been hurting themselves, even if she says it was a one-time thing, it’s critical to get help. This dangerous behavior may be her way of dealing with a serious mental health issue.
At MBC we offer play therapy for children. Children often feel more comfortable when they are communicating their thoughts and feelings through play. The positive bond that forms when therapists and children are playing can provide a means necessary for healing. Therapists assist children in helping them resolve their own problems. Children gain insight into resolving their dysfunctional thinking or inner conflicts, learn to express their feelings, develop problem solving skills, and learn various ways of relating and communicating with others.
Anxiety is experienced by most children and teenagers at some point. From having to take exams, to athletic competitions, public speaking, making friends, or going out on a date, our kids are typically faced with situations that can cause uneasiness. As a result, they may experience a rapid heartbeat or begin to sweat. But there are some individuals where anxiety can affect them in a more adverse way, such as negatively impacting their friends and family relationships, participation with sports, or with difficulty concentrating on their school work. If the anxiety begins to interfere with their daily life functioning, then it is time to seek help from a mental health professional. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 25% of 13- to 18-year-olds have an anxiety disorder, and just under 6% have a severe anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders often co-occur with depression as well as eating disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other diagnoses. At MBC we are committed to providing our child and teen clients with the coping strategies they need to help them navigate healthier and happy lives.
